What are vaccinations?

Vaccinations generally contain tiny doses of de-activated viruses and bacteria that stimulate your pet’s immune system to protect them from contracting specific illnesses.

How do pet vaccinations work?
The vaccine is usually injected under the skin (but occasionally it takes the form of a nasal drop). The dose is too small to make the pet ill, but is enough to stimulate the pet's immune system so that it develops antibodies against the disease. If your pet is later exposed to the disease, the antibodies are ready to fight off the bacteria or virus before it can make your pet ill.

Why are pet vaccinations so important?
Vaccinations protect against a wide range of infectious diseases, many of which can be fatal. Vaccination provides your pet with excellent protection against these diseases. As well as protecting your own pet you are also helping protect the wider population from diseases spreading.

If you do not have your pet vaccinated (or up to date with booster vaccination), you may find your pet insurance will be invalidated.

When should I get my pet vaccinated ?
The timing and frequency of your pet’s inoculations will depend on the type of pet being vaccinated and the disease being vaccinated against. See your specific pet vaccination page for more details. Booster vaccinations are usually required on an annual basis.

Are pet vaccinations risky?
In a very small minority of cases, some pets may have adverse reactions. When these occur they usually involve a small swelling at the injection site that disappears without treatment, or 24 hours of being slightly "under the weather", similar to when people have vaccinations. It is possible, but extremely rare for pets to have an allergic reaction to a vaccination.
