Dan is Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology and co-leads the VetCompass Programme as a research and teaching resource.

After graduating from Dublin Vet School in 1987, Dan worked in general practice for 22 years, latterly running his own companion animal practice in Kent for 12 years. During these years, he has also gathered qualifications in pharmacology, general practice, feline practice, dermatology and business management. In 2009, he undertook an MSc and then a PhD in veterinary epidemiology at the RVC. His PhD was supported by the RSPCA and developed the project collecting primary-care veterinary clinical data to generate evidence on breed health in dogs and cats. From 2013-2014, he undertook post-doctoral research supported by Dogs Trust to establish welfare scoring methods in dogs. From October 2014, Dan was the Kennel Club Charitable Trust Companion Animal Epidemiologist at the RVC. Dan was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology in September 2017. In this role, he co-leads VetCompass as a research tool for a wide range of welfare-related studies and as a teaching resource for large numbers of undergraduate and post-graduate projects. Dan gained a PGCertVetEd in 2020.

Dan was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2018, the BSAVA - Blaine Award for Advancement of Small Animal Science and the RVC - James Bee Student Nominated Award for Outstanding Project Supervisor in 2019, and the RVC - First prize for PGCertVetEd in 2020. In 2021, he was awarded the Kennel Club Charitable Trust ‘International Canine Health Award’.

In addition, Dan chairs the UK Brachycephalic Working Group and is a founding member of the International Collaborative on Extreme Conformations in Dogs and of the Dog Breeding Reform Group. He is a member of the RCVS Knowledge Quality Improvement board, the RVC Clinical Research Ethical Review Board and is an Associate Editor of the Journal for Small Animal Practice.

Since 2011, Dan has authored over 95 peer-reviewed publications and co-written two books: Breed Predispositions to Disease in Dogs and Cats (2018) and Health and Welfare of Brachycephalic (Flat-faced) Companion Animals - A Complete Guide for Veterinary and Animal Professionals (2021).

Dan's research covers a diverse range of epidemiological studies based on primary-care veterinary clinical data collected via the . His projects include studies based both at the RVC and a growing number of external collaborations both in the UK and internationally. His research focus is primarily on improved understanding of the role of breed in relation to disorder prevalence and severity. In addition, Dan is involved in projects that also explore animal behaviour, drug usage, demography, longevity and welfare as well as human translational questions.
