New study evaluates the risk of mammary cancer in bitches in primary care practice. Just over 1% of bitches were diagnosed with mammary tumours during 2016. Springer and cocker spaniels amongst others were identified as at increased risk breeds, as were older bitches and those not neutered.

Dave Brodbelt, Professor of Evidence-based Veterinary Medicine at the RVC, said:

‘This is an interesting study that highlights breed associations, older age and neuter status as major factors for mammary tumour diagnosis. These findings can help guide vets when discussing with owners the risks of mammary cancer particularly in the older bitch.’
