Two recent studies of the UK’s largest wild boar population have revealed how they use their habitat and how frequently they visit livestock farms. This information is being modelled to inform the prevention and management of important infectious diseases such as African Swine Fever (which has not yet reached the UK but is present in mainland Europe). The studies were conducted by Sonny Bacigalupo - who recently obtained his PhD at RVC and who now works at APHA – along with Julian Drewe and Ruby Chang at RVC, and colleagues at the Pirbright Institute, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
