The RVC Animal Care Trust Funds State-of-the-Art Hearing and Brainstem Assessment Equipment
The RVC Animal Care Trust (ACT) is delighted to announce the funding of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses (BAER) testing equipment for the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (QMHA). This cutting-edge technology will optimise assessment of hearing and brainstem function in patients with a range of neurological disorders, so enhancing clinical care and opening exciting new research and educational training opportunities at the QMHA.
BAER testing is a non-invasive diagnostic tool used to evaluate hearing and brainstem function across species. It involves playing click sounds through headphones and measuring the resulting electrical activity via small electrodes. The computer displays the electrical activity as waveforms that can be analysed to assess hearing and the anatomical structures involved in the auditory pathway.
The enhanced capabilities of this new equipment, including its portability and efficiency, will allow clinicians to quickly and accurately diagnose hearing deficits and brainstem dysfunction, improving outcomes for patients and supporting owners in making informed decisions. The BAER system will also facilitate clinical research and will enhance veterinary education by providing hands-on, live diagnostic testing in the clinic. The BAER system is a vital step forward in both veterinary care and clinical research at the RVC. The ACT expresses its gratitude to our supporters who have enabled the purchase of this pioneering equipment, which is helping to improve patient care and advance veterinary medicine.
